Erythritol is a very popular sweetener especially in the low carb scene. Recently, in the very renowned Journal "Nature Medicine" an article ("The aritifical sweetener erythritol and cardiovasuclar event risk", Witkowski et al., 2023) appeared, which raises some questions.

Is erythritol dangerous? Will I harm my health if I use it?

We want to find answers to these questions for ourselves. Nevertheless, I can only give you Insights into my reflections give. Everyone must form his own opinion and make a decision for yourself.

1. what is erythritol?

It's like with all things. Be it sugar, salt or sugar substitute. As long as you don't have any health limitations, it's okay to eat anything to enjoy in moderation.

And as delicious as ice cream may be, you should only treat yourself to it as a treat every once in a while, and it do not exaggerate. Just because an ice cream has fewer calories, you should not be tempted to eat more of it.

  1. A nice summary and food for thought, thank you! I have never used erythritol, but xylitol and just household sugar, but always in moderation. To deny yourself everything is not the right way and ice cream is already a great treat, especially in the summer.

  2. if i always listened to what some studies said, i wouldn't be allowed to eat anything. i have taken sweeteners in the form of liquids, tablets and powders all my life, and i am perfectly healthy. so i will continue to use Eritritol.
    Of course, everyone has to decide for themselves. I eat ice cream every day...1 to 2 portions, but my ice cream consists only of frozen fruit, some yogurt, inulin and Eritritol and goma xanthana, but there are no other sweets, no purchased, sweetened dairy products, etc..

      I see it similarly. A study only says that the probability of a certain occurrence is higher across the group under consideration. This does not mean that these effects will actually occur in an individual. Therefore, everyone has to decide for themselves how to deal with such information, because only each individual knows their own body and previous illnesses.
